Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Missouri Northern Pecan Growers

How do pecans grow?

  • Pecans grow on large trees. Pecan trees can be well over 70 feet tall and more than four feet in diameter. It is not usual for pecans trees to live more than 200 years.

How should pecans be stored?

  • Pecans stay freshest by freezing them. Pecans will remain fresh several months when stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Storage in a sealed bag in the freezer will stabilize pecans freshness for 2-3 years. Heat can cause pecans to become rancid in a few weeks.

How can I tell if a pecan is fresh or good quality?

  • A fresh pecan is a light golden color. As a pecan ages, the color gradually becomes darker. A dark brown pecan is probably rancid. Many retailers do not realize this and may keep old, even rancid, pecans on their retail shelves. Thus, it is important for you as a consumer to understand how to select quality pecans.
  • Taste is the best determinate. Pecan should have a pleasing, almost sweet flavor. If a pecan taste sour, bitter or has a strong after taste, it is probably an old pecan or has been exposed to heat for an extended period of time.

What does “pecan’ mean?

  • Pecan is a Native American word meaning “crack with a stone.”

Aren’t pecans high in fat and calories?

  • Pecans are relatively high in calories, but it is monounsaturated fat (good fat). Monounsaturated fats can help reduce bad cholesterol levels in your blood which can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Is Missouri a big pecan producing state?

  • Missouri is the northern most pecan producing state and accounts for no more than 2% of national production. However, our shorter growing season and cooler climate is why our native pecans have more oil and the uniquely sweet flavor.

When are pecans harvested?

  • Pecans are typically harvested between November and January. Our pecans are available year-round for sale.

Are pecans genetically modified?

  • US- grown pecans are not genetically modified.  Our focus is on wild pecans, which, of course, are unaltered by man.  However, all pecan varieties grown in the U.S. have been developed through conventional breeding methods, such as selective pollination and tree grafting.

What are “wild” pecans?

  • Wild pecans are the indigenous pecans that grow naturally in groves, often near rivers and creeks. Native or wild pecans make up only around 20 percent of the U.S. pecan crop, compared to the cloned varieties or cultivars of pecans that have been planted in orchards. If you do not see wild American Pecans where you shop, you can order online.

Are pecans gluten free?

  • Yes, they are! Pecans are naturally gluten free. Our pecans do not contain any additives, preservatives or gluten-containing ingredients.

Is your facility Peanut-Free?

  • Yes, our processing facility is peanut and other allergen free. We only process pecans.

Does high cooking temperature impact pecans?

  • Yes! Heating pecans at very high temperature can affect their nutrient profile. High temperature often causes protein denaturation and can affect bio active compounds present in pecans.
  • Roasting or toasting pecans for a very short period of time may not significantly lead to a profile change.
